What Homeschoolers Are Saying

marguerite tara

"True stories put together in a way that young people can relate to really get my daughter excited about history. The lesson plans and activities you provide are so straightforward, and the additional language arts exercises you include are just wonderful! We're especially excited about the poetry exercise. The expression of moral conscience and love of country in your series is unmatched in books today. Your homeschooling packages are well-rounded and just what we need for young people. My daughter, Tara, can hardly wait for the next one!"

Janet and Dillon

"I really liked Doing My Part because it was based on a real story. I'm going to tell my friends they should read this book because it's a great story! I want to read the next one."
Dillon, age 9

"The No-No Boys is an engaging tale. It vividly portrays life as it was for many children forced to live in the internment camps in the US in the 1940s, a topic new to my son. It is packed with emotion, historically accurate details, and excellent descriptive details. He got a good idea of what life really was like for kids his age in a very difficult situation.

"The homeschool packet is fantastic as well, because it offers fun and interesting ways to learn more about WWII, the internment camps, and young Japanese-American kids. The suggested activities also offer opportunities to look at other related topics, and encourage additional questioning and learning. They are a far cry from "busy work." They are exercises in creative writing, drama/theatrics, arts/crafts and more-not the typical workbook approach, but instead hands-on research-a huge plus in our household!"

Janet Otto, homeschooler and mother of Dillon

"Doing My Part brought WWII alive for my kids. They know how they would want to behave in difficult situations, but they weren't sure if they could do what Helen did. It made them aware of all they take for granted. It also caused them to consider how war has an impact on everybody, not just the soldiers.

"The lesson plan and activities materials are clearly listed, so the teacher knows what to plan for. The objectives are met in the variety of questions, activities, and discussions that are encouraged through the lesson plans. Each lesson stimulates student thought as to how they might have reacted if they were placed in the same situation.

"My students were excited to learn about the "real Helen Marshall." Ending the book on that note really clinched this story in their memories. That, I believe, is what made this book really come alive for them. This story isn't just make-believe-there was an actual individual behind this story. They are eager for me to read the next book in the Home-Front Heroes series."

Beth Schaffer has homeschooled all three of her children and also teaches fourth grade part-time at the Phonics Factory in Boring, Oregon.

What an EXCITING series and curriculum to make history come alive for homeschoolers! We've been homeschooling for over 12 years, and we just LOVE Doing My Part and The No-No Boys, and we're excited for the next installment. Both my 13-year-old boy and 6-year-old girl sat in rapt attention as I read a chapter to them today. The lesson plans are creative and easy to understand and implement. This is a great addition to any History/Social Studies curriculum. Kudos to the creators of this wonderful series!

kits

Like our Bailiwick School Kits, our Homeschool Kits contain all the tools you need to use the Home-Front Heroes books in your homeschool classroom:
  • Copies of the books
  • Teacher-written lesson plans and student activities
  • Worksheets you can photocopy
  • And a gift from the author

The kits are appropriate for use with 3rd-8th graders. The book reading levels are in the 4.4-4.9 reading range, making them excellent choices for 3rd- 6th graders and useful for older students when you need a supplemental text and activities.

The Home-Front Heroes books are based on the true stories of American children in World War II. They also contain back matter telling your students more about WWII history. They are age-appropriate, with no questionable content. They explore what it was like to be a normal kid during a time of great national sacrifice. This makes the Home-Front Heroes characters excellent models of citizenship and responsibility.

You can use your Bailiwick Homeschool Kit in a variety of ways!

  • To teach World War II history
  • As part of a language arts unit
  • As a book report selection
  • To support character education
  • As summer reading that's engaging AND educational

The third book in the Home-Front Heroes series will be available in fall 2009. It tells the story of twelve-year-old Miguel Montoya, whose older brother has joined the army and whose sisters are working to support the war effort. Miguel is expected to take their places in the family grocery store. But living in San Antonio, Texas-one of the most exciting military cities in the country-Miguel would rather be helping win the war than stocking shelves. So when Miguel is also asked to watch his troublesome little nephew, he rebels. But then the realities of war hit home, and it is Miguel who must hold the family together and save his nephew from danger.
